This study analyzed alcohol usage patterns and identified motives for drinking in Korean college students by different colleges (healthcare vs. non-healthcare) in a University. College students (N=783, 58.6% women) completed self-reported questionnaires anonymously and voluntarily. Information was obtained about demographics and alcohol usage patterns. Among the survey participants, 690 (88.1%) drank alcohol. One hundred seventy-six pharmacy students (PSs), 201 medical students (MSs), and 313 students from other schools (SOSs) reported consuming alcohol. PSs, MSs, and SOSs with ¡Ã 5 drinks on 1 occasion during the past 30 days were 43.7%, 58.1%, and 52.3%, respectively. Social motives, especially to get to know people more quickly, were major reasons for drinking alcohol in the participants. Of 246 students (63 PSs, 72 MSs, and 111 SOSs) who consumed alcohol mixed with highly caffeinated energy drinks (AmHCEDs), 22.9% (21.0% of PSs, 13.9% of MSs, and 29.7% of SOSs) reported drinking to excess more frequently when consuming AmHCEDs. Based on the results from this study, Korean universities or colleges should develop appropriate intervention or education programs targeting college students who consume AmHCEDs as well as those who drink only alcohol.
